Start with the job you need to do
Some tools help you merge edits. Others compare almost any kind of file. We built Workbook Compare Pro for a job we kept doing ourselves: checking that new Excel output still matches the approved version.
Choose two files or folders, decide which differences matter, and save the setup when you will need it again. That is a good fit for reports produced after a software update, a data refresh, or another analysis run.
| Your job | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Check the same report layout after a change | Positional cell checks, formula and formatting checks, tolerances, and clear results. |
| Check a whole report delivery | Folder pairing, missing/new file results, reusable settings, and saved reports. |
| Reconcile edited workbooks | Row/column alignment and merge tools. These are outside Workbook Compare Pro’s current scope. |
| Compare many kinds of files | A general file comparison tool, especially if folders also contain code, documents, or images. |
| Check sensitive reports | Understand whether processing happens on your computer or on someone else’s service. Several desktop tools work locally. |
Where Workbook Compare Pro fits
- Two files or whole folders. Check matching files together and see changed, unchanged, missing, and new entries.
- Saved projects and suites. Reuse paths and settings, then run several checks and save a report.
- Local comparison. Your workbooks are processed on your PC. There is no upload step for comparison.
- No daily comparison quota. Runs are not metered by credits during the trial or with a paid license. Practical file and memory limits still apply.
- Options you can test. Use the included samples, written exercises, and how-to videos to see what a setting changes before using it on a real delivery.
Our current Excel comparison is positional. We do not merge workbook edits, recalculate formulas, or align reordered XLSX records by a key. CSV and TSV do support key-column matching. Those distinctions matter more than a long checklist of checkmarks.
See the folder guide or the report-checking demonstration for a practical example.
Workbook Compare Pro and Microsoft Spreadsheet Compare
Microsoft’s Spreadsheet Compare is worth checking if your Excel edition includes it. It compares workbook changes, shows formatting differences, exports results, and can compare VBA. Availability is limited to supported enterprise and equivalent Office editions; it is not included with every Excel license.
Workbook Compare Pro is a separate Windows app for checking workbook and delimited output, including whole report folders and saved suites. You do not need Microsoft Excel installed to run a comparison. If VBA analysis is part of your job, Microsoft’s tools have capabilities we do not offer.

Workbook Compare Pro and Beyond Compare 5
Beyond Compare is a strong general-purpose file and folder comparison tool. It offers folder synchronization and specialized viewers, with additional merging features in its Pro edition. Version 5 can compare multiple Excel worksheets; the old single-sheet limitation is not an accurate description of the current version.
The difference that matters for workbook checking is how Excel is read. Beyond Compare’s documented table conversion extracts textual content and does not identify formatting or embedded-image differences through that conversion. Workbook Compare Pro checks supported XLSX formatting and image details as well as values and formula text.
If your day involves source code, many file formats, and folder synchronization, Beyond Compare may fit a broader set of jobs. If you need to catch a changed border or number format in a generated Excel report, try our workbook checks and compare the results on your own files.

Workbook Compare Pro and Synkronizer
Synkronizer runs as an Excel add-in. It compares data, formulas, comments, formats, rows, and columns, and can transfer changes between tables. Its Developer edition also supports multiple-file processing through command-line or VBA use.
That makes it worth considering when you want to update or synchronize tables while working inside Excel. Workbook Compare Pro runs separately and focuses on checking outputs, reviewing the differences, and saving repeatable projects and reports. It does not merge selected edits back into a workbook.

Workbook Compare Pro and xlCompare
xlCompare offers key-column matching for reordered workbook rows, formula and formatting comparison, workbook merging, VBA comparison, three-way merge, and command-line use. It also works locally; local processing is not unique to us.
If you need to reconcile reordered XLSX records or merge competing workbook edits, those are reasons to look at xlCompare. Workbook Compare Pro’s focus is the repeatable report check: compare fixed-layout Excel output, handle folders, and keep the settings ready for next time. Our key matching currently applies to CSV and TSV, not XLSX.

What about a free online Excel comparison tool?
A free browser tool can be enough for an occasional check. Before uploading a report, read how that particular tool handles files, what it compares, and what limits apply. Some tools process files in the browser; others upload them to a server. Do not assume they all work the same way.
Workbook Compare Pro gives you a desktop option with no comparison upload step, folders, saved projects, suites, and reusable settings. If those are things you do every week, they can save a lot of picking the same files and setting up the same check again.
Try the same small pair in any tools you are considering. Include a value change, a formula change with the same answer, and a formatting change. If row order matters to you, test that too. You will learn more from those results than from a claim that any one tool “does everything.”
Ask us about your actual files
Have an awkward report, a question, or an option you wish we had? Contact us and tell us what you are trying to do. We will take the time to understand it. A short explanation or a small example with invented data is enough to start.
Our seven-day evaluation includes every feature. Use the examples first, then check a real report you already know well.
